Colophon

A note on form. How Critical Dependencies is set, structured, and published.

Section One

Typography

Serif
Source Serif 4, used for headlines, running text, and quotation. Chosen for its even colour at long reading lengths and its restraint at display sizes.
Sans
Inter Tight, used sparingly for interface text and structural labels.
Monospace
JetBrains Mono, used for metadata, section numbering, lens and pattern identifiers, and dating. It signals reference material rather than ornament.
Hierarchy
Three sizes of serif, two weights, one italic. No decorative weights. Spacing carries emphasis where typography would otherwise insist.
Section Two

Structure

Matrix
The publication is organised as a single matrix: three research lenses, six foundational patterns, and nine critical systems. Every published study occupies a defined position within that matrix.
Lenses
Governance, Resilience, Dependency. Three perspectives applied uniformly across every system and every pattern.
Patterns
Six recurring structural patterns observed across otherwise unrelated critical systems. Each is the subject of a foundational study.
Systems
Nine long-lived systems on which modern societies depend. Each is treated as a long-term case study rather than as current events.
Grid
All pages are set on a twelve-column grid with consistent rule lines, generous margins, and stable section numbering across the publication.
Section Three

Cadence

Established
2026.
Issue cadence
Quarterly. The publication prioritises depth and consistency over frequency.
Foundational studies
Published as completed. Each is a standing reference rather than a dated essay.
Revision
Substantive corrections are dated and noted at the foot of the affected study. The publication retains a record of its own changes.
Section Four

Editorial Posture

Subject
Systems, not actors. The publication studies structures, mandates, and dependencies. It does not profile individuals or report on personalities.
Voice
Measured, third-person, declarative. The publication takes no advocacy position and does not campaign.
Sources
Primary documents, technical standards, regulatory filings, incident reports, and the open scholarly literature. Cited where appropriate; never paraphrased to obscure their origin.
What is absent
No marketing, no sponsored content, no advertising, no lead capture, no comment threads, no engagement metrics on the page.
Section Five

Production

Set in
Source Serif 4, Inter Tight, JetBrains Mono.
Rendered on
Plain HTML, served statically wherever possible.
Imagery
None. The publication uses no photography, illustration, or decorative imagery.
Accessibility
Semantic HTML, sufficient contrast, no motion required to access content.
Closing

Form follows the work.

Restraint is not a style choice. It is a condition of taking the subject seriously.
